Pakistan Imran government has come on the back foot amidst heavy opposition from the army. Imran Government Information Minister Dr. Firdaus Awan said in front of the media that the government will review Musharraf’s death sentence in detail. However, Prime Minister Imran has called a cabinet meeting today. Musharraf’s issue may come up in this meeting.

Actually, this controversy has arisen from a letter from the Army, which is currently going viral. There is resentment against this decision in the Pakistan Army after the death sentence of former President Pervez Musharraf. This debate has intensified on social media these days. The army has launched a campaign on this. The army has praised Musharraf’s bravery. Pakistan’s ISPR has issued a tweet and a letter regarding this. Army has shared this letter.

The letter stated that the former Chief of Army Staff, Joint Chief of Staff Committee and former President who served the country for 40 years participated in many important wars. How can he be a traitor in such a situation? The military has supported Musharraf through this letter. The army has also questioned the court’s decision. The military argues that the Pakistani constitution has been ignored by the court in the sentencing process. The Pakistan Army argues that the constitution has been ignored in punishing the former President. The right to self-defense has been violated. It violates fundamental rights. The Army letter says that we expect justice to be done with Pervez Musharraf.

Significantly, in the case of treason, former President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf has been sentenced to death. He was accused of imposing emergency. Musharraf imposed emergency in Pakistan in November 2009. After this, Nawaz Sharif’s government filed a case against Musharraf in 2013. Since March 2016, Musharraf has been living in Dubnai for treatment. A fugitive has been declared in this case. Musharraf is the second president to be sentenced to death.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa is in the news with Musharraf’s sentence. His recent decisions of Khosa are seen as a challenge to the army. Because of Chief Justice Khosa, it is being seen as a challenge to the army by the Pakistani judicial system. It has been seen as a judicial activity in the history of Pakistan.

For the first time in Pakistan’s 72-year history, a former dictator was sentenced to death in a sedition case. Khosa had questioned the tenure of Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, reducing it from three years to six months. The Supreme Court said that the President issues notification of extension of service, so how did the government decide to extend Bajwa’s term? The Pakistani army was very angry with this decision. Retired General Amjad Shoaib had termed it as an insult to the entire army.

The Imran government had removed its law minister over the controversy over the tenure of the army chief. Khosa is also known for taking on the government. The Chief Justice last month targeted Prime Minister Imran Khan in a case related to Nawaz Sharif. He had said that Nawaz went abroad at the will of the government and not the court. He advised the government to stay in a way. Without naming the Prime Minister, Khosa said – you do not tighten the judiciary. This is not a pre-2009 jury, now the time has changed. No one is powerful before the courts.
